Natural treatment for myself, 44. I have always know I have a mild case of it.
Diagnosed by a Physician?
The main strands of alternative treatment would focus on one or more of the following:
Diet, There are various theories linking ADHD to lack of certain nutrients, this can either be because they are absent from the diet or are not being absorbed properly. Malabsorption can result from food allergies or intolerances. A simple thing you could try is a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement and something rich in omega 3 e.g. flax oil, flax seeds. However if there is any problems with the gut wall they may not be absorbed so an assessment by a qualified nutritionalist would be the next step. If you have any 'tummy' problems this would make a food intolerance more likely.
Herbalists, generally using herbal stimulants as an alternative to meds such as ritalin, sometimes help. Again consult a professional and take care to find someone experienced in dealing with this and well qualified. Remember that herbs used wrongly can be dangerous.
Homoeopathy, if you can find a competent experienced homoeopath.
There are various behavioural therapies and biofeedback techniques. You would be wise to get a doctor to recommend a suitable practitioner.
Some people have benefitted from sacro-cranial therapy perfomed by an osteopath who has the relevant training.
One thing that is sometimes mentioned in ADHD is the possibility of excessive levels of heavy metals in the body. This has been measured in several cases. BUT please be aware that chemical chelation treatment to remove the metals can be dangerous, and fatalaties have occurred. However some natural substances are reported to act as mild natural chelation agents if taken over time. These include, chlorella (an algae that can be bought as a supplement) ,fucus (a kind of seaweed that is often also sold in supplements) garlic, coriander, and vitamin C. A healthy diet, rich in plants, with plenty of variety, and plenty of water with help the body to cleanse itself naturally of any toxins that might accumulate.
The problem is no one thing helps everyone, and some people go through a great deal of time and money and get no relief from any of these, whilst others will say they have benefitted enormously from alternative treatments. Every case is individual and the success of individual practitioners varies enormously.
Please check with your doctor about any alternative treatments you are considering.
