How do I respond to a summons for an outstanding medical bill?
I was served a summons last week because I am being sued for outstanding medical bills. I have not paid on these because I had to make a career change after an anterior cervical fusion after I broke my neck/back and my income unfortunately has dropped well below my previous salary. I don't have the money for a lawyer and I desperately need some advice. What can I do? I have no experience with this kind of thing and am about to freak out! Please help...

You have to respond to the summons. You admit you owe the money, and they want it. Unfortunately it had to come to this. They don't care that you have lost income, they just want their money for services rendered. What did you expect to happen after you didn't pay ?

Follow the instructions on the summons; there will be a phone number and address, a docket no. and a court date. You appear on the court date.
