Is it illegal for a dealer to sell me a car with no title?
I purchased a vehicle from a dealer in Las Vegas and the title is at the previous owners credit union. I contacted the dealer and have been lied to several times about the delivery of the title. It has been almost 3 months and they have not produced the title, the law is 30 days. The dealer did not file a extension and now I want my money back, do I have a case?

I would contact the police and tell them what happened. Maybe they can talk to them, may they can tell you about the dealer. At least maybe this won't happen to the next person. Call better business bureau. Maybe a state agency. This is where I would start at least. Hope it works out.

    Hello m:

Maybe. File a lawsuit in small claims court.

Not really a Police issue, although it is against the law, it is not the law inforced by police.

It is a civil law issue and you can sue them for your money back.
Also report this to the license department that licenses car dealers, they may lose their license to sell cars.

I may, if it was me ( OK I would not have waited 3 months) but send them a letter explaining I am going to sue, and report them in 10 days if a title is not produced.

Contact the agency at your state capital that regulates car dealers. Have them step in. What that dealer did was illegal. They will be punished legally for what they did. They may just help you get your money back if you can't get the title to the car free and clear.

Did you have proof that the title was still with the credit union? That would mean that the credit union had a lien on the car and won't release it without the loan being paid off.

Now it depends on the conditions of the sale to the dealer how this was supposed to happen. The dealer could have taken the car on a contingency basis so the loan would not be paid off until the car was sold. In that case it may not be the dealer who is the hold up but the original seller. So it may not have been illegal for the dealer to sell the car without having the title.

You may not be able to get the sale canceled but you should be able to get the title.
