Hi,

We own two Camry's, 1994 and 1996. Neither of them turn the twin fan relays on when hot. I've resorted to removing the relays and feeding them both 12VDC direct, which means fans on as soon as ignition is on.

I've checked the sensors and replaced the middle sensor (of 3) on the engine block, but no go.
As usual, switching A/C on turns on the fans. Does anyone have any clues?

Check and see if there's a sensor on the bottom of the radiator. If there is, un plug it with the relays in. The fans should come on full steam. If they don't, trace the wire harness leading to that sensor.
BTW, stating what engine(s) you have helps me out.

What engine coolant temperature do you expect the fans to come on?
The spec for your Toyota's fans to come on is about 208°F. If the coolant sensor isn't "seeing" 208° there will NOT be fan operation.
But, relax! This is normal for systems to operate at temps from 208°F for FANS ON, to over 230°F or so for FANS OFF.
Learn more about these things and others by browsing your owner's manual or inquiring (at higher costs... ) at your local dealer.

With many areas experiencing high local ambient temperatures, most all reports of overheating cooling systems and A/C systems being inoperative should be carefully scrutinized to validate the concern or educate the operator.

The engines are both 2.2L.

Finally found the problem... both Temperature Detect Switches on the bottom of the radiators are stuffed.
AU$44 each later and both vehicle's fans start up as required.
