My son threw a rod through the side of the engine block in his '99 camry. What engines will fit this year and model. I know some of the other models have interchangeable engines and was wondering if anyone knew which ones might work in this one. And are the "slightly used" engines coming in from Japan with 25,000 to 30,000 miles on them okay to use or should be stay away from those?

Go with an identical replacement engine, otherwise you may have more problems than you bargained for. This will ensure ECM (computer) and wiring harness compatibility, among other things. Keep it simple.

Start using full-synthetic engine oil, to help protect you from the actions of young drivers.

I would recommend you do an internet search.
Call around and see who asks the right questions to determine the correct engine for your car. Ask about their BBB rating and how long they've been in business, etc.
I know some very good parts suppliers. Let me know if you're interested.

Thank you. I use synthetic in all of my own vehicles but was waiting to do his first oil change to switch to it in his. Guess don't need to wait now. :p I will make sure and get an exact replacement so as not to give myself any more headaches than what a teenager driving already gives. ;)

Great idea. I didn't think about asking those questions to establish if they're reputable. What do you think of the "used" Japanese engines? I have a guy who can get one but I'm wondering why it's so much cheaper and if it's junk or not. Thanks for your help! :)

For personal asset protection, have the car titled in your son's name.

While I don't have any opinion or experience regarding those "used" Japanese engines, I don't know of any verified source for them to even get these engine deals. Makes me wonder...
If you want to get down to the nitty-gritty, ask for the VIN of the car the engine is coming out of and run a Car-Fax.
If the supplier refuses to provide you the VIN, don't give him your hard earned money and shop somewhere else!
