The State of California? For what purpose?

In theory, yes, assuming California has a judgment against you. It could register the judgment just like any other creditor and then get a garnishment writ. Also,if it's something special like child support, there may be additional processes available.

I don't know if OP is asking about the State of California having a judgment OR a PERSON in the State of California having a judgment - Texas does not allow garnishment except for certain specific debts (among them student loans, child support and alimony, taxes).

One of those where I wish OP would come back.

The more you put into a question the better we are able to answer it. As you can see yo9u did not give us enough info to help you.

As noted Texas law does not allow wage garnishment in certain situations. So we need to know more about the reason your wages might be garnished.

Can CA garnish my wages in TX for auto loan?
I reside in Tx and have been for 8 years, a friend used my name to co sign for an auto loan in 1999. For the past few months the dealer has been garnishing my wages from CA, I am wondering if that is legal and what can be done to stop it.

They must have received a judgment against you, no matter where you live, or they couldn't garnish your wages. Did the friend actually sign your name to the document ? This is fraud if it happened. Why did you never follow up on it? Why did you let it happen?

I found out recently, been asking to see the documents, they never produce anything for me. So even though TX is a non garnishing state they can still garnish my wages?

OP posted again today, in a new post, giving more details. I screwed up trying to cut and paste it here, sorry.

First, please don't start a new thread with follow-up. Use the Answer This questions options. I've merged your threads for you.

If your name was signed without your permission, you can try to fight it, but it would mean your friend might go to jail for forgery. You would also need to fight it in CA.

If your job accepted the garnishment order, then I would assume it was legal. So you need to get the judgment vacated. If you were never informed about the original suit, you should be able to get it vacated on grounds of improper service. From there you get a new hearing where you can try to prove you never signed as co-signer.
