In multiplication, you multiply the numerators and the denominators:
If you want to divide, then you need to reverse the second fraction:
Then, you proceed with multiplication.
In addition:
The usual way around is to find the lowest common multiple of the denominators. In this case, the LCM of 2 and 4 is 4. Then, you change the fractions so that they are on the same denominator.
Once the denominators are the same, you perform the calculation with the numerators, that is:
Subtraction is similar. You only change the sign, like this:
