The little icon on taskbar that turns on or off sound is missing. How can I get it back? Thanks

Control panel. Click on little speaker and tick the box that puts it back on task bar.

I did as you said but no luck. That window seems to be unworkable. SOunds, voice, audio, hardware only bring up a 'faded out' window, which I assume means not working. I had the icon on taskbar before but must have done something to delete it unknowingly. No, there are only 3 icons there now. ANY solutions?
