Hi there! I am going to have a root planing tx done, and I have a couple of crowns in my mouth. I am concerned, because I seem to have a pretty deep pocket around one of my crowns. Is the crown going to impede the dentist being able to dig around in that area? Would you have to take the crown out of the pts mouth to be able to thoroughly clean that area, and apply the medication? Thanks for your response. I am concerned because I want to know what I'm getting myself into before I go. CC

I had periodontal surgery around three of my crowns several years ago, which is more extreme then root planing. My crowns did not at all hinder the surgeon from performing the operation. So, no the crowns won't have to be taken off for your procedure. Follow the dentist's after care instructions to the letter and you will not have any problems

Root planing is essentially teeth cleaning, but deeper. The pockets are there, so the tooth needs to be cleaned deeper.

I have to alternate regular and peridontal cleaning every 3 months.

First: Invest in an electric toothbrush. I like the oscillating head version by Oral-B. Dramatic improvement in pocket depth. Ask the dentist what teeth have the largest pocket depths and what they are, so you can pay more attention to them.

Second: It's been recommended to invest in a water jet. Haven't yet.
