The age difference is a good question. It seems that having common interests and values would be a problem.

How long have you known each other? What drew you together?

It raises many questions about integrity and intentions.

To me , it would almost seem like taking part in raising your spouse.

There is absolutely NO, ZERO reason a 32 year old should be dating a 17 year old. Maturity levels are completely different. You aren't even legally allowed to vote. You can barely see an "R" rated movie. The ONLY motive a 32 year old could possibly have to date someone your age is for sex.

**Please don't blast me for my opinion. In my mind, however, this isn't an opinion, it is fact. It may not be illegal, but I guarantee you it is highly frowned upon, like counting cards...

If the parents of the 17 year old do not want their child dating a predator there are many other laws that can be used to keep him away and put him in jail if he does not.

So he can date the 17 year old but only if the parents approve.

I just looked it up, and it said that the legal age of consent is 16 for NC. May I ask you though, what do you have in common with a 32 year old, please?

If you really are 17, you can legally consent.

If you aren't 17, and you are still a minor less than 16 years of age, there are laws in place in NC that could easily see your 'boyfriend' spend some time in the slammer.

I question your honesty about your age because googling 'age of consent' in NC, brought up over 80,000 hits, in less than a few seconds. Surely you have the same information.

Instinct tells me that if you said you were under 16, you would know already what the correct answer is, and by saying you are of consentual age at 17, you will find some sort of confirmation that it is okay to be sexually involved with a 32 year old man.

I find that it is very, very strange that you are involved with a man of 32, while you are still a teenager. Odder still, is that he likely knew you were barely legal (if you are), and you questioning this particular part of your relationship, should be a huge red flag to you. Think- target. With you being the target. He wants sex. He doesn't want to bring you home to meet his parents, unless they too have a few screws loose. I presume you don't want to bring him to your senior prom either, or even out bike riding or want him to hang out with your friends.

If you met him on the internet, you could be a target, and he has been looking for somebody just like you.

I cannot imagine how else you could have met him, unless he is a friend of your parents, or if he is the parent of a kid you babysit, etc.

What he is, is a very strange, and potentially dangerous man. NO DECENT MAN would date a 17 year old, when there is an age difference that spans two distict stages of human development.

Please reconsider what you are doing, or what you are about to do. If this has to remain a secret, then you should not be in a relationship with him at all.

I really don't give a damn if I am 'factually correct' or not. A 32 year old man, has no business being in any sexual relationship, or boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, or any kind of relationship with a young female of 17.

Jake brought up a very good point. Is he an online boyfriend and have you even met him.

Seventeen is really not so young, and 32 is not so old. And they could in fact have a lot of things in common - gaming, taste in music or movies or television, political views, love of animals. There are all sorts of things that these two could find common ground on.

While there is a possibility of a power imbalance being played upon, that isn't necessarily the case. To assume such is only a knee-jerk emotional response, when no one here knows anything about these two or their situation.

It's a good thing to ask all the right questions and remain cautious, but to demonize immediately and so adamantly is a bit much.
