    Not getting a 1099
    Hi
I similarly to "moist_plum" did a freelance gig for a non-profit organization. They are being reluctant and/or neglient in supplying me with a 1099. Are they legally obligated to supply this? I mean, I know what I earned from them, so therefore couldn't I report that income anyway without a form from them? However, if they legally need to supply the 1099, I want to further impress upon them to do this.

Their reluctance, I believe, is that if they do this for me, they will have to report for all of their contractors. They don't want to go through the hassle this may create for them internally as well as with other contractors who like to receive money under the table.

Its not a good idea to piggyback your question on someone else's thread. So your question was moved to it's own thread.

If they paid you more than $600, they are required to file a 1099 otherwise they can't claim it as an expense. I suspect, since they are a non profit, they don't have to worry about writing the expense against income, so they don't need to send out 1099s.

Even if they fail to generate the Form 1099-MISC, you are still legally obligated to report the income on Schedule C and pay taxes on the net income after you deduct your expenses.
