Carrier 2.5 ton outdoor unit hums periodically. Substitute capacitors?
I have a 16 year old home, with the original Carrier air handler and outdoor unit. The outdoor unit "groans" for just a few seconds, once every few minutes, but the fan does not run. I assume the groaning is coming from the compressor.

Question #1: Is this typical of a capacitor problem?

I pulled the service access cover, and noticed a bulge in one end of the capacitor. It is a GE dual round, 35/5uf 370v. I have a do-it-yourself handyman neighbor who is willing to "loan" me a spare cap that he says is "close enough." 36/6 uF.

Question #2: Is it OK to put that in until I can get the "real" part?

    Thanks!

Try it and see. Got to be better than what you have now.

OK, Turns out that the part he had available to "loan" me was a 40/5 uF run cap, to TEMPORARILY replace my 35/5. He also gave me an amprobe to take with me to look at the motor current. The rating plate RLA is 14.1, and I am pulling 12 to 13 right now with the 40/5. I am going to leave it there for a few days, a new 35/5 should be here in time to swap back next weekend.

At least the AC is back on.
