Who is responsible for a 1099 subcontractor who is injured
I have subcontractors who I pay to clean vacation rental homes. One is asking me to pay her medical bill for stubbing her toe while cleaning a home. Who is responsible?

    Thank you,

You are NOT responsible, period. People who are 1099'd are responsible for their own medical bills...

In the future, you might consider requiring proof of insurance and BWC filings from your contractors and subcontractors so that they know in advance that they can't come to you with issues such as this.

    I agree with Rick.

In most states (US) a person or company is considered a legal subcontractor when they meet certain criteria; completely independent, supply their own equipment/supplies, their own insurance (personal and business), their own employees and coverage, etc.

You as the contractor have no legal responsibilities other than paying for the work performed, etc.
