    Unemployment benefits for self employed
I have worked for Yellow Cab Co. for the past 3 yrs & just recently lost my job. We were paid in check form but there were never any taxes taken out. Before this job I worked for years for Lexus & Infiniti where I paid taxes. Would I be a candidate for umemployment benefits? Thank you

Unemployment is an insurance program not a welfare program. So if you paid into it then you can receive benefit from it. If you didn't pay into it then a welfare type program is your only option. Were you paying taxes yourself?

If you were a 1099 employee ( self employed) or have your own business, no you can not collect unemployment since you were not actually "employed" merely running your own business and go out of business.

    Hello p:

The Padre is right. You can't use your layoff from the cab company as a REASON why you would be eligible.. But, you CAN use your layoff from the company you're speaking of - IF it happened in within a particular time frame.

    I'd certainly apply.

If you were self employed at Yellow Cab for 3 years you will not be eligible to collect unemployment benefits as you were not laid off or the company went out of business. This is not the case where you will be eligible. You need to work at least 26 weeks for one employer in order to be eligible again.
