What does the term 'Philadelphia Trap' mean? I have a trap in the basement that needs replaced, and I was told it was a Philadelphia Trap.
Thanks

I have done repairs and some installation for over 45 years and this term is new to me, doesn't mean its made up but bet it is. Ever heard of a Chicago air gap?
Hi Guys...
I agree with Ballengerb1... not a term I've heard of or could even reference online in any manner. Probably a local term as he said!
Does your trap look like any of these below? Let us know.. OK?
Either way, if you need to replace the trap let us know what material the trap is made of and we'll go from there. If possible post a pic... just curious here... ;)

Thanks guys.
The trap I'm talking about has a return bend with plugs on the top for clean outs, (whole house trap). The vent pipe tees off ahead of the trap, and goes out through the wall. The trap is inside the house, in the basement. DJM
Just like the other experts The term "'Philadelphia Trap'" is a new one on me. I think DJM's referring to a New York trap,(see image).
Bob asksNope! Educate me. What is a "Chicago Air Gap":? Cheers, TomQuote:

Mark, that was the scariest series of photos I've seen in long time !:D
Milo,
You and I live in areas that don't keep old buildings around for decades and decades. We simply tear them down and build new.
However Marks area has a lot of drum traps still in use.
Back when I broke in up in Wisconsin we installed bathtubs with no vent and a cast iron drum trap. I grew up in such a house.
Every time the tub drained it would gurgle and talk to you through the tub overflow. My area went to cast iron "P" traps in the 40's.
Just a little nit of plumbing history,
Regards, Tom
I would like to thank everyone who responded to my email. All the answers I received were good honest answers.

Let us know if you need help/info. On removing the trap!
