I'm looking to buy a new camera, and after much searching and reading over reviews I became interested in the Canon Rebel XTi.

So far, this is the best package that I've found so far, including lenses & the camera:

I was wondering:
1) Are those lenses most likely Canon?
2) From the measurements, is this a good lens?
3) Do you know of any better cameras in a similar price range?

1. Canon makes a 28-80 lens, so it is most likely a canon lens, if unsure, you should be able to find a customer service number.
2. The lens looks to be a great starter lens. 80mm will give you a good range for normal picture taking and photography. If you want a greater zoom, you might want a different lens.
3. I would personally look no further than the Rebel XT or the XTi. Great cameras. Hands down. I would check eBay also. We own the XT and got a great deal on eBay.

You asked a few weeks ago, so it may be too late, but I'll answer anyway. The lens in the picture is not the one they give you. The photo shows an 18-55 which is a very nice lens, but the package probably comes with a knock off brand (ask them to be sure). I would also check eBay and buy from someone with at least a couple hundred good feedback ratings. Although I have used Nikon for over 20 years, Canon has done a great job with their digital SLRs and all of them are very nice and practical. I personally would suggest the Nikon D70 as it has many of the same features of their pro line, but the price is probably a bit more.
Keep in mind that the lens length in digital cameras is not the same as with 35mm film SLRs. A 28-80 digital lens is more like a 55-160 in film cameras. So if you really want a decent bit of wide angle, you need a lens like shown in the picture (18-55) which is equivalent to a 35-110.

I love Canon products period there are other models that give Canon a serious run for the money... SIGMAS Japanese products have some serious material available for the new comer and the advance here is a website address with reviews on this SIGMAS: websitehttp://www.dcviews.com/press/Sigma_SD9.htm. But, I hate to compromise so stay with Canon products. For lens most lenses on the market fit any Canon camera...

The types of lenses that should be in your camera case are:

Wide angel lenses start at 55mm – suggest Canon
Macro zooms from 80 -300mm lens – suggest Canon
Do not forget to get a hood and lens caps and cleaning tools for your lenses.

To be frank just take your Canon to a camera shop and select a lens that fit the pocket. It is the photographer and the clean lens that gives you that special picture.

I have bought the same package and it works great.

That lens is not the sharpest but it does still a great job.
I make my living with this camera and the lens does work great for most occasions.
I had a manual fm2 nikon before jumping into the digital. I called a friend who had been in the game long before and he said that this would be the best one to get ( he shoots hockey games for the Montreal Canadian hockey team and knows a lot about cameras)

XTi is a great camera but most package include a canon lens but unfortunately the mount is only plastic (where the camera mounts to the lens) and therefor is prone to breakage and wear (mostly if you take it on and off the camera) So if you're only going to have the one lens it may not be as big an issue.

That particular lens is fairly slow 3.5-5.6 so shooting indoor/low light without a flash will be tough. Think also about the 28mm end of the range it's not that wide if you're shooting groups and not able to back up.
