My beginning is in First and not in Last. (beginning of first is "F")
My Middle is in Sad and in Happy (middle of sad and happy is "a")
My ending is Rust as well as in Rest. (Rust and rest both begin with R. The do also end in t, but I don't think that the answer is fat because of the clue)

That is where F A ST comes from.
