    Prove paternity
I found the name of a man that could be my father after 40 years I haven't got in touch with him as of yet still seeking current addresses but if I do find him and just want a dna test to prove that he is my father and he refuses is there any steps after that I can take.

You can attempt to get a Court Order for purposes of inheritance. Some requests (I'm in NY) succeed; others fail.

There was a thread on the Missing Persons board where a woman did just this. She proved paternity; the father then re-wrote his Will and disinherited her.

    Neither side won.

I am also aware of a case in NY where a woman got a Court Order requesting that her "possible father" be tested. He was not her father and the matter caused him problems within his marriage. He sued her and the mother for defamation. I don't know what happened.

IN most cases unless there is a pending issue for an estate, the courts are slow to order a DNA test.

I would ask after 40 years, if he denies it ( or did not know perhaps) what does it really matter
