The black bits left behind in my kettle look awful. What are they

Obviously something that has been in the water that you used to make tea water in. Try using bottled water to see if the black bits are the cause of the water and not the kettle itself.

Remember, when you boil any water the water is concentrated and any kind of sediment will be present in the cooled water.
