    Hi Char...

Some things to consider in relocating the toilet will include:

    1) Looking at the joists. Does the toilet pipe run with the joists or will you need to run the pipe through the joists? Here, you can't remove more than 1/3 of a joist for a pipe, so if you have a 3" pipe (3.5" outside diameter) your joists must be a minimum of a 2"x12" (11.5" by measure) to run that pipe through the joists. If your pipe is 4" (4.5" outside diameter... you do the math). Otherwise, you'll need to head off the joists or build a soffit below the ceiling downstairs to relocate the toilet.

    2) Pipe type. Do you have lead, copper, PVC or ABS plastic, or cast iron pipes? Each pipe type will require a specific SHIELDED transition clamp. Let us know more here.

    3) Fittings involved. Here, is the toilet pipe one large cast iron fitting that has all the other bathroom pipes connected to it? If so, you'll basically need to plan on replacing more than just the toilet pipe.

Let us know what you know...
