high pitch noise from a/c unit on randomly
We have a high pitched noise coming from our a/c - you can hear it outside and inside. It seems to cycle through. It doesn't come on immediately, the unit is cooling well and it seems to be getting worse. I have had two a/c guys come out - one added a dryer ($300 later) to the unit and then told us to replace the compressor. The other said the compressor is fine, but thinks we need to recover the system, add a suction line filter, do a pressure test, deep vacuum and recharge the system with new refrigeration for $600, but better than a new compressor for $2000. Any other ideas?

Can you determine if the noise is coming from ccompressor? Or maybe the fan motor, when its making the noise hold your hand on top of unit (touch) where the motor is mounted you might feel the squeal.

I feel you really need to find someone local to you that knows exactly what they are doing and not guess at the problem.

you're a god damn genius how come you didn't tell him it could be a normal operating noise. Naturally I could also be the idiot for posting this.
