How do I adjust vavles on 17.5 hp. Briggs stration motor

You'ss need the specs for your engine.

Typical specs are 0.004" E&I 1/4 after TDC.

Positioning the pistion can be done with a dial indicator and knowing the intake, compression, (TDC), power, exhaust, (tdc) valve positions.

You want after the TDC position, not the tdc position.

Loosen locknuts on lifters. Adjust so you can pass a feeler gauge. Lock. And check again. Check with sizes above and below 0.004.
