Poorer than thou statistics do nothing
India has published statistics showing their people in some parts of the country are poorer than 26 african nations
What is it that people who compile such statistics hope to prove, that the world should concentrate its aid to one of the fastest growing economies in the world and further disadvantage the disadvantaged? I cannot understand such thinking but unfortunately it lines up with the way Indians think. I think they should be putting their money into alleviating poverty rather than developing nuclear weapons and space age technologies

Just recall the stats before the Indian economy started to develop. What that stat shows me is that there has been some tremendous growth .

Why shouldn't India reach for the stars ? It is a completely unrelated issue to the fact that some of the agrarian sectors of the country have not advanced at the same pace.

Besides ;with the US abandoning manned space flight in favor of politically correct pablum ,there is a void to be filled .

You missed the point entirely, my post isn't about whether India should have a space program but why their priorities aren't towards those in poverty in their nation when they want us to know how poor they are. If you want your nation to cede leadership to India, you can go down that road on your own. Any nation with a space program doesn't need international aid, it has crossed the divide into the developed world

I don't know what foreign aid India receives ,or if that was the point of the statistical breakdown .You did not provide a link to the report .

Should India receive foreign aid ? I think they are at least as deserving as Greece or other EU nations that have destroyed their 'develped' economies with nanny-state polices.

Hey I wouldn't be giving Greece or the EU aid either, nor would I be giving Pakistan a nuclear state aid, even though there might be poverty there

You can see what you make of it, personally I think it is like climate change statistics, indicative of something but not pointing to what an effective response might be. Perhaos this is what has prompted the publication and the debate

The Indian economy will surpass the British economy within a decade or so .Then the Indians can send foreign aid to the Brits.

What for? To pay the dole to all the Indians in Britain? Note one of the articles speaks of rich Indians living in Britain

A racial rant.

I like looking at figures and stats simply to place them into my mental file cabinet for future use. Did those articles imply the Indian Gov't is requesting aid from other nations as you suggest here? What I came away with was the Brits want to cut aid to India. Less than 24 hours later we see the "poor" stats from the same news source. Politics as usual between two countries that have a very divisive history.

There are many Indians living here who are living rich by their nation's standards. I for one am pleased the brain drain went in our direction. The Indian immigrants here came here legally ,and do what they can to assimilate . They speak the common language of our country ,and we are beginning to see their children become influential in the body politic. With their country becoming more prosperous there will be less of a desire for their population to migrate .

It is my hope that the move by President Bush to create a natural alliance with India continues .From a strategic viewpoint it makes a lot of sense to make common cause with the world's most populus democracy.

Britain is being sensible in the face of their economic condition and withdrawing aid from a nation with the capability of looking after themselves is not wrong but many nations conduct their politics and foreign policy in the media and India happens to be one of them thus my question. There are severely disadvantaged people in my own nation but we don't look for foreign aid to help them whereas India's disadvantage is endemic to their culture and social system
