B/W Movie possibly from the 40s-50s
There was a movie I saw only once as a child, broadcast on television late one night, but I never could find out what it was called so I could see it again. It was in black & white, and set in the 1940s or very early 1950s.
The "hero" of the story wakes up in a US army hospital sometime during WWII with amnesia from a head injury. He is only identified from his dog tags, but has no memory of who he is. He is released from military service, goes back to the US, and begins the search for his identity. Somewhere along the way, he finds the name of a guy who can answer the question to his identity. The only problem is: he is on the run from the mob for having cheated them out of a large sum of money. As with movies of this genre, he also picks up a love interest along the way who is committed to helping him in the search for the mystery man-on-the-run and the question as to the "hero's" identity.
The twist comes at the end of the film when he and the love interest are facing the cheated mobster on a warf at gunpoint. It gets revealled that the "hero" is in fact the mystery man whom he has been seeking all along. He joined the military after hiding the ill-gotten money in order to dodge the mob. He got the bright idea to switch dog tags in the field with a fallen soldier to help further hide his identity. Unfortunately for him, he got wounded and developed amnesia as to his true identity.
He gets the better of the mobster. & puts his corrupt past behind him. He resumes the stolen identity, & gets the girl. I can't remember myself whether he ever remembers where he hid the stolen money.
The details are a bit fuzzy & I might not be remembering it 100% accurately. Does this movie ring a bell with anyone?
Thanks in advance!!
