Today we had to put my Dalmatian down, he couldn't breath and was just very sick. I am looking for ways to make it a little easier, on myself and on the other dogs. They don't seem to notice his absence yet, but I am sure they will. I miss him already, it is going to be so weird not having him around, I've had him more than 11 years (We think he turned 12 (or 11) this month not to sure though).

:( I am so sorry for your loss Emily. Try and keep you and the other pooches pre occupied. Maybe an extra walk or drive in the car. I remember you saying he was sick before, I am sure he is in a happier place now. Not suffering.

Its fine when I am with people, but the minute I am alone I just can't get him off my mind. I know he is better off, but Im wondering if we couldn't do more. I just feel so lost :(

I'm so sorry Emily:(, it's a really hard thing to get through, but it does get easier. Try thinking about the fun and funny stuff that he did and you might find yourself smiling. It worked for me:)

The loss is awful, isn't it?

We had to put my 16 year old standard poodle mix down yesterday because he had either a stroke or brain tumor.

I'm having the same problem, except I feel really guilty, even though the dog could no longer walk or recognize me. I just can't get beyond the tears... he was a member of my family and had been around even longer than the grandkids.

Devora, regarding the guilt you feel, we all second-guess our decisions at this crucial time in their lives because we don't know how they are really feeling or thinking. But the fact is, the decision you made was completely based upon your love and compassion for your dog. You were guided by your vet and you know very well that your vet would not have recommended this if he/she felt there was any hope.

You definitely must have done something right for him to have lived as long as he did. You actually managed to get a couple of additional years with him that other people who own standards rarely get. I think the reason for this is your obvious love for your dog. Grieve for him as you will, but don't forget to celebrate him along with the life & love you shared with him.
