We recently had a really bad storm which flooded half the city. When I went downstaires, water was coming out of our sump pump hole and flooding the basement, only a inch and then it stopped. Since we don't have a pump we took pails and dipped the water out, and stopped after a while, (we took half of the water out). And then then it rained last night again and we tried dipping the water again but it won't go down! We tried dipping a lot, but it just keeps coming back up, not flooding but it it doesn't flood. Also I found a tree root or some type of branch growing or sticking out of the concrete thing right beside the tube that in the hole. I'm really worried, is it ever going to stop? Will it eventually go down or will it flood again and also, what is that tree rot that it growing?

What has happened is the local water table has raised to a level where your seeing water in the hole from the ground being saturated. In all reality if you can afford it then it would be wise since you have a hole there to install a sump pump. That way it will aleviate the water problem on its own. Most have a float installed and are completely automatic.

Sump pumps don't cost that much... harbor freight has some on sale right now, if I'm not mistaken...

But really... as a person who lives in an area that has had three "500 year floods" in the past 15 years... two of them in the last three... a must confess that I take great pleasure in knowing that my sump pump is in working condition.

Its worth the coin you spend.

First things first. Install a sump pump. Next, determine where the drain terminates. Outside in a ditch or dry well or the city sewer. In addition to the sump pump I would also install a check valve on the outlet so It wouldn't backup anymore. Good luck, Tom
