    Parvo
The dog I adopted from a rescue site developed parvo ,either in shelter ,or in transporting her to where I live. The carrier was recently cited for the horrible conditions in the van they use for transport.

The dog is now in a pet hospital that is going to cost me a small fortune .I am told she has a 50-50 shot.

The cost is not my big concern .I want the dog saved . She had a death sentence and I gave her a reprieve .

But in my research of this I have found a new cause to champion and I want to go to war against these puppy mills .

What I am looking for is organizations /legal foundations that are taking on this fight.

    Thanks .

I'm in NY also - call your local animal shelter and ask if there's an organization, who to contact, where to write.

It varies from place to place. At one time I was active in pet rescue but there was no one organization that did a good job. Some States are more organized than others.

I WOULD write my Senator and Congressman.

People also have strong feelings about PETA - at one point they were VERY active against pet mills. I may not agree with their tactics BUT they have a loud voice and a big presence and they get press - good, bad, indifferent, but they do get press.

I don't know how much research you've done on this subject but many of us have fought puppy mills for years and years. There have been some small steps over the years but as long as people buy "designer dogs" or dogs from pet stores or backyard breeders this problem will continue. As long as you are on a rampage, take a look at pet stores in your neighborhood. Find out where they get their animals. Take a stand. I won't buy pet food/treats/supplies at ANY store that also sells cats/kittens/dogs/puppies. No exceptions.

Puppy mills are rampant in parts of PA and also in NY, particularly in Amish country. I'm not picking on the Amish. I'm not saying "all Amish." I'm saying that they are a problem in Amish country. I've also been told that there are puppy mills on sovereign territory but I work on the road, have never seen a single one and believe that to be rumor. Amish - I've seen.

Mine was in a holding kennel in North Carolina and I'm told she was hours away from euthanasia before we set up the adoption with the rescue organization . I know from the records that the person who transported her to NY was the same one identified on the link I attached . But I think she got parvo in the extermination kennel .

I went to the hospital tonight and think she'll survive. But are there longterm adverse conditions related to parvo ?

I recently lost a dog that had epilepsy for 7 years and was hoping to have a relatively healthy pet this time. Plus I need her to be healthy because my dogs are hiking companions .

So was the puppy from a puppy mill? Or a shelter/rescue?

I had a dog that survived parvo many years ago. She lived to be 12 and never had another problem.

I really did nothing but keep her from being exposed to other health problems (I avoid dog parks, anyway and live in the country so I'm not walking her on sidewalks). She was also very slender but she ate well and I have no idea if there's a connection.

She really came out of the episode with flying colors.
