Is it necessary to use a different meter for single pahse and 3 phase electricity?
I recently had a smart electric meter installed at my home. The 1st tech said he couldn't install it because I have 3 phase and the meter was designed for single phase. A 2nd tech came out an installed the meter anyway. I now get an error message but the tech said it didn't affect KW usuage and said the meter was accurate. Of course my KW usage is way up from before installation of the smart meter. Am I correct in assuming a single phase smart meter cannot be used for 3 phase electricity?

Each type of utiltiy meter, single pahse and three phase, needs it's own meter socket.

Single phase is a 4 wire socket, three phase is 7 wire.

And there are some single phase systems that need a five wire socket.

You need to have a meter dept supervisor come out, look at your electric service and exisitng meter socket, to be sure the proper meter is installed.
