I am replacing my (20 year old no longer working) AC unit with a Trane or American standard. Most of the contractors suggest a 3 ton unit (house is 1400 sq ft). They also want to replace my 4 ton coil to 3 tons to run better with the new AC unit. QUESTION I have is that do I need to do this? I have one contractor saying that he does not need to replace this coil if I want to save money, while others say they do not want to mess with it. 2nd question is which is better TRANE or AMERICAN STD? Keep in mind my furnace and coil is 5 years old and my furnace is a Trane.

Replace the old coil. There are many reasons for this but I am not going to type them all. You should also get a new copper line set to replace the old one. The new unit uses R-410A refrigerant and the old one used R-22. The oils are not compatible so it is better to change the copper line set along with a new MATCHING coil for the new outside unit.
