    System.dat error
    Hi;
    I am using w98se, 256 Ram, 1800 mhz and 40 gs hard drive. When I log on I get the system.dat error please stand by as the registry fixer solves the problem. I can then use the PC for the rest of than session but the fix doesn't t hold and the error pops up again at the next log on ! I have tried renaming system.dat into system.old , that didn't t help / I used reg fix that did nothing / went into dos startup to use a backup copy of the reg they are all corrupped. Short of doing a hd reformat and then re install w98se the only thing I can think of is to see if re installing w98, doing an overlay fixs the error but not sure, and not in a hurry to use w2000 happy with w98 .

    Any other ideas as to a fix? What have I missed?

    Thanks.. .

    This may help you.
    Sounds like your registry is bscoming corrupt.

    Have you tried any of the number of registry cleaners that are available on the net.
    A good one to try is CCleaner.
    Not only will it help repair your reg but also removes junk files from your system.

    Well worth considering is getting another 256 RAM and upgrading to XP.
    Your system is more than capable of running it without any issues, in fact I'm surprised that it isn't already.

    I was surprised that you mentioned moving to 2000. Nobody uses that. XP is delicious.
    It does look like something is corrupting, how old is your system? - I know my PC started having similar problems before the HD crashed.
