I would like to install a P-trap about 18 inches from a tub drain. This would involve putting a 90 degree elbow on one side of the p-Trap so that I could use it in a horizontal run. That is the p_trap would be something like a running trap but using a P trap. Ia this permitted. If not what type of trap is permitted on a horizontal drain ru.

As I am guessing you suspected, a "running trap" is not allowed under any circumstance in plumbing.

In your case you need to install a PTRAP directly under the tub waste and overflow assembly of the tub to follow plumbing code requirements.

How are you venting the tub drain? Let us know.. OK?

My local code would allow a running trap, (see image) if aspproved. The only other type of trap used on a horizontal drain would be a drum trap, (see image) If you're attempting to stay in code call your local Building Department and check. Good luck, Tom
