How to connect a ceiling fan to a wall switch
Ceilling fan with light. From the ceiling I have two black wires, and one red and white. From the fan itself I have black, blue and white. My fan has I light which we use all the time. How do I connect the wires. I tried the two black from the ceiling to the black and blue from the fan. And white to white, everything worked but when I turned of the light switch everything went of and I need the fan to stay on when the lights are of.

Do you have a second switch, if not maybe tie the fan(black) to an unswitched wire and operate from pull chain. If you have 2 switches, you need to determine which are the 2 switched legs.

It would make it a lot easier for us if you had a picture attached of both the outlet box in the ceiling and the switch box.

I need to understand the configuration of the wall switch. Can you please remove the face plate and pull the switch out. Is the Red/White wire connected to the switch?

Normally, you should find a black/white pair in the ceiling that is the source for the fixture. The Black would get connected to the black on the fan. Next, the fan whit would go to the supply white.

If there is only one source, then you would need a "Pigtail" for the supply black, the fan black and the feed for the switch.

According to the NEC, you can re-task a white or gray conductor to carry power from the supply to the switch. Return has to be via a black (or red, or blue). In this case, I suspect that the Red/White conductor will be the feed to your switch. The black that returns will be the feed to you light (Blue) on the fan assm.

What was there before the fan, and how was it wired?

What were the black, red, and white wires in the ceiling connected to before the fan?
