Can mothers ever be seated beforehand?
My mother has developed an anxiety disorder and is petrified of being in front of people; now my sister is having a large wedding, and my mother, of course, is having serious issues with the idea that she must be escorted down the aisle. The groom's mother was recently in an accident and has broken her ankle, which makes having her escorted into the sanctuary rather difficult--she has asked if she can be seated prior to guests arriving, and now my mother wants to know if the same cannot be done for her. Has such a thing EVER been done?

If that is what your mother wants, then arrange for it to be done. Nothing is carved in stone.

I've been to many weddings, most in fact, where the parents of the
Bride and groom were already seated with guests before the wedding
    Party walked down the aisle.
Weddings can be as traditional or personalized as you want. It's all
About what makes the bride/groom and their guests most comfortable.
Weddings shouldn't involve any tension, so if it were myself, I'd do
Whatever made my mother comfortable. Your mother's comfort is far more important
Than any so called "tradition." She'll be remembering this day for the rest
Of her life, and you certainly wouldn't want her memories to be anything
    But pleasant and happy.

I do weddings almost every week. The rule is, ANY and EVERYTHING goes, what ever you want. It is your wedding. So do things exactly what makes you feel best

Go with what your mom wants! If you don't you'll never hear the last of it. Kidding.

All or most weddings I have attended the congregation is usually seated before the Bride and her Father even enter the church.
