When I accidental shoplifted in Ocean State Big Lots in CT ($8), the loss prevention officer from the store told me I was going to receive a letter in the mail and that I have to pay that bill which will compensate their financial losses. The incident happened Dec.15, 2008. It is almost 2 years now and no letter. Is there any reason they are taking so long? How long does it take to receive a letter? The loss prevention officer told me to call at Law Offices of Michael I. Asen, P.C to get information about my incident, I have called at Law Offices of Michael I. Asen, P.C located in NY many times, and they have told me that they have not been notify of my accidental shoplifting. Should I call the store and find out what is going on or should I forget it about it and let it go? I will truly appreciate your advices. Thanks.

Concerning your question - What do you mean by "accidental shoplifted" and did you return what you shoplifted, please?

First of all, thank you Clought and Excon for helping me out. Answering Clought's questions yes. What I meant by "Accidental Shoplifting" is that I put a $8 lipstick in my pocket with my chainkey. Then I went to the register, and I paid for all the things that I bought in the store. I was going to buy the lipstick, but I totally forgot that I still had it in my pocket. Then when I was leaving the store a man came to me and said that I was leaving the store without paying for something. I was in SHOCKED! I asked him WHAT? He said you forgot to pay for the makeup that is in your pocket. I explained him what happened, but he didn't believe me. He took me to the back of the store and filled out a paperwork with my info. Then he made me sign it. He never ask for my social security number, and he never call the police. He just made me sign a paperwork with my info on. He said he will keep the paperwork in the store as a record. He said the police will not bother me at all. Then he gave me a piece of paper that says"CIVIL DEMAND" In that piece of paper says that I will have to pay a fine to the store. I'm more than willing to pay that fine cause I really don't want more troubles. I feel bad about myself because I wasn't shoplifting at all. I just forgot that I put the $ 8 lipstick in my pocket with my chainkey. I did return the merchandise, although I didn't pay for it because the loss prevention officer didn't let me do it. This is why I called an accidental shoplifting.

The police can no longer do anything, since no charges were made, and the statue of limitation for a misdemeanor would have long passed.

The Loss Prevention officer told you what normally happens, yours would have been so small, and they must have believed you, so the store never even sent it to the attorney ( of if the attorney got it, they decided not to act)

You drop it, you are the only one even concerned or worried, most likely the store managers, the loss prevention people are all at other stores and would not even remember you if you walked up to them.

You will in the end, cause yourself more issues if you keep bothering them
