How are outside scholarships typically applied to a student's account?
Hello experts and subscribers! I received a $1,000 scholarship from the Imagine America Foundation in November 2009. However, the scholarship has not been applied to my tuition account. Someone in financial told me that it will post to my account at the end of my program. This is not logical, especially when next semester I'll have to come out of pocket $1018 after my pell grant and student loans posts to cover my tuition. It seems logical for financial aid to apply the scholarship to my account next semester. This way I would not have to borrow as much money in student loans. Is this policy unethical? How are scholarships typically applied to a student's account?

Enquiring - do you have a copy of the award notification from the Imagine America Foundation? I would try to call them and ask for clarification on their policy for grant reimbursement... e.g. do they pay once you satisfactorily complete the semester, etc.

If the foundation's policy is that they only release the grant after the courses have been satisfactorily completed, that is their policy. It is totally ethical for them to create whatever policy they want to since they are the student's benefactor. The onus of having enough funds available to pay your tuition bill is on you. You just have to be sure when you plan your semesters out that you completely understand how your student loans, grants, etc. are being disbursed so that you can prepare accordingly.

I know it is frustrating to find yourself in that spot where you need dough to pay your college bills and to start looking for someone responsible for your situation... but you have to look to yourself and realize that this is a learning process (the college process that is) and you have to have all of the facts and understand every move that you make.

Wow! Finally an answer. Thanks jakester! I saved a copy of the award notification and will contact Imagine America on Monday morning. I truly appreciate your valid answer and now understand if this is their policy. I will plan accordingly and will continue to maintain my 4.0 GPA! Thanks again jakester!

First you got an answer fairly quick, no one is paid here, we do this in our spare time, so depending on where you live and the time.

It can be hours at best normally and often it will take a day or two for some experts to come back with follow up.

As noted, many scholarships are done requiring a certain GPA, so if you do not make it for that term, it does not apply

Hello Fr_Chuck and thank you so much for your reply! I received your warning message and will read the posting rules. When I registered, I did not see a Terms of Service link at the bottom of the page like most websites, so I did not read the posting rules. After much digging, I found it and will be sure to comply. Thanks for alerting me and God bless!

Thanks enquiring mind - I'm not sure... if you look at my my post above, do you see a square box titled "Comments on this post" with a Give yours button (Agree or Disagree)? If not, that's OK... it's the thought that counts ;)
