I have recently been summoned to court over a credit card debt that I failed to take care of. I suppose the notices have been sent to my parents house which I have not lived at in a long time. I do not deny that I owe the money but I can't afford to make large payments. Is it possible to call the collectors office and arrange payments with them before the court date therefore not having to go to court over the matter?

You suppose that notices have been sent to your parent's house? Was one not hand-delivered to you?

There is no avoiding the inevitable. If you avoid issues and don't try to make contact with the other party when they are seeking to get their money, and now through a court, then things will go on without you, and not to your benefit.

If I were you, I would be doing everything possible to see what kind of arrangements can be made with the credit card company.

Calling them would be the first thing to do. Please be sure that you have a witness on another line and inform whomever you speak with that you have a witness on the other line.

Since it's already gone to the collection stage, your only alternative may be to plead your case in court. But, you need to call the credit card company first.

You may try, but a sad trick of some collection companies is to give verbal terms and then they go on to court without you showing up to merely win.

You also may have to deal with their attorney. Also by this time, they already had attorney fees, court fees and more that have been added.
