Question re title to real property
I have paid taxes on a piece of real property - vacant lot - in Arkansas for over 8 years. I have checks and paid tax bills to prove my payments. The lot has not been maintained by anyone during that time. What are my title rights? Thank you.

    Hello dream:

Well, if you don't own it, I think you've been very nice to the guy who does, for paying his taxes.

However, I seem to think you think you've inherited this property through some sort of homesteading, or squatting rights because you've paid taxes on it. That sure could be so. So, tell us, what did you think you were doing? I'm sure you had a plan in mind. Why don't you tell us, and maybe we can see if it worked.

Why would you pay taxes on property you did not have title to?

Your first step is to go to the county clerk's office and find out who is listed on the deed. If its not you then you may have thrown away your money. In the case your name is not on the deed, you need to talk to the county clerk to see if there are any laws like excon mentioned, that will allow you to assume title.
