Ayla is having her tonsils taken out... she has been put into twilight before (basically make her tired enough to fall asleep on her own but not under) but she has never been UNDER before. And never went under a knife, the twilight was for crowns on her teeth. I am so frightened for my baby girl. I don't know what to do...

A part of me is relieved, that her doctor is doing what needs to be done to make her better but part of me is just terrified.

She is getting them removed because it has been infection after infection. And after this last infection a few months ago, the swelling and 'strawberry tongue' and redness on the tonsils never went away. They have always been WAAAAY too big and making her snore and have mild sleep apnea. So I am so glad that they are going to be GONE.

But I can't get over this fear of the surgery :( :(

Fortunately, I'm a good actress, and she is excited about the ice cream afterwards. I Don't want to frighten her.

I am wondering if any of your chidren had this done. Is it easy? Safe? Any problems? Anything to worry about or ask the doctor about?

Hi Jennie... can only speak from the experience of relatives and a few students I have taught. None of my own children went through it.

For all of them it went well... quite unremarkable actually. The benefit that was played up well was the fact of what they got to eat afterwards... popsicles for example... :) Recovery time was quick... they were out of school for about a week.

You might want to ask the doctor, if they haven't gone over it already: how long you can expect the average recovery time to be, are there any sorts of things she shouldn't have during that period, and what to watch for/when to call them.

This is more stressful for you than for her... like you said, be a good actress for her... and stock up on popsicles! :)

I can only speak for me too, and I had mine out when I was 18. And it HURT like HELL!! I couldn't even eat the ice cream and Popsicle they were trying to feed me. But I hear it is worse for adults than kids. I lived off liquid codeine and stayed in bed for like 2 weeks.

My son had his adenoids removed at 3 years old... I wanted the tonsils removed as well, but doctor did not want to.

When I was seven years old, I had both my adenoids and tonsils removed.

You know what, yes it is a scary and nerve racking thing thinking about your child being put under and having surgery.

The thing is honestly complications are very rare, they will go through all of the process with you and what you need to do.

Also as a parent if you show that your fearful or scared and nervous they can pick up on that.

So what you need to do is do your best to relax. This will be the best thing for your little one.

Moods will improve, eating will improve, sleeping will improve and the benefits of having this done is amazing and there is no way else to do this surgery unless the child is put under.

I also pumped up the jello, Popsicle and ice cream and boy did he ever take advantage of it. Lol lol lol

It really helps if the see the parents being strong, the more they see you scared, the more scared it will make them.

I had my tonsils and adnoids out at age 7. It wasn't very scary at all. The hospital I went to let m choose the "flavor" gas they used to put me under. I chose cherry. Afterward, I didn't get to eat much icecream... and at the hospital dad ate my popsicle. But it wasn't that bad of an experience

I still have my tonsils but I do remember my mom telling me about the day the doctor came to remove the family tonsils. It was when she turned 5. She was the middle child of 11 and the doctor came to the house and every child had their tonsils removed.

Back then they were considered unnecessary. You didn't have to have infections, you just got them removed whenever the doctor had time.

None of the kids were put under. They weren't given anything, just open wide and out they came. A few days in bed, ice cream, and back to life.

I'm sure Ayla will be fine. All my mom's brothers and sister survived, and they were fully awake and aware. :eek:

It was the 1930's Joe. They did a lot of weird things back then.

My mom said that it didn't actually hurt, it just felt strange.

I think the fact that it was done in their home is even more odd. What about sterile environment? I know my Oma was a neat freak, but come on! :eek:

I had mine out when I supposedly never dialed a phone before. Mom showed me how in the hospital and I woke her up. No ill effects that I remember.

I just remember being put under with Ether and the cloth covered screen they put on your mouth. Everything else. Positive.

Family tonsils out? Wow those poor kids!

Thanks for the support eveyrone. I am feeling better today. I guess the shock of it is wearing off. I'm not so frightend. Still nervous, but not terrified. I'm reading up about it all and learning about it and taking all of your advice and friends from other sites and such. It seems really easy, so I am feeling a little better.

And as terrible as it sounds, I'm looking forward to the day or 2 she won't be talking much HEHEHE

Oh aurora don't be afraid! I NEED to hear the storys. So that I know everything I can. That's the only thing that's going to make me feel better. So far the WORST case scenerio is the possibility of them doing the 'shaving' instead of cutting, and talking may make the wound break open and they will have to cauterize it again.

I'm pretty traditional, and conservative... I don't like new ideas lol I hope I can convince the surgeon to do it the traditional way instead of the new and improoved laser way lol.
