Keyboard freezes and takes PS/2 mouse with it!!
    Hi,

I ran Windows Update yesterday and ever since, my PS/2 keyboard doesn't work in XP. Everything on my computer is up-to-date. I cleaned the computer with Adaware, Spybot, Windows Defender before running Windows Update and ever since, whenever XP starts up, as soon as I press a key on the keyboard, the keyboard freezes as well as the mouse. The computer itself DOES NOT freeze as I can see the screensaver along with other indications.

Both the mouse and keyboard are Logitech. The mouse itself is a USB mouse with a PS/2 adapter.

In Device Manager, there's an exclamation mark beside the keyboard. The error reads:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the "hardware device. (Code 41)"

I have done the following to try to solve the problem:

    - Uninstalled the last windows updates
    - Uninstalled keyboard driver, reinstall it
    - Installed Logitech's original drivers
    - Updated BIOS (as suggested in another forum)

    Nothing works.

The keyboard works in BIOS and also on a different computer. There's nothing wrong with the keyboard. I tried a different keyboard on the affected computer and it doesn't work either.

What the heck could the problem be?

I have pretty much tried everything short of a format! Please help!

Something so essential as a keyboard not working is very frustrating and debilitating. I can't get any work done.

I have too much stuff to back up and a fresh format would take too long. Also, I have read in another forum that even a format might not work.

Please help! I am completely out of ideas and this problem is nowhere close to being resolved.

I have looked at the following forum for help and have tried everything that others have but nothing has helped.

At this point, I am just tearing my hair out and crying like a baby! :( :( :( :(

Have you tried booting to windows with just a mouse, or just a keyboard to try and replicate the lock-up? Also try booting to safe mode and see if the problem replicates again...

I have had the same problem (touch a key and the keyboard/mouse freezes) since applying M$ updates two days ago. It only affects my PS2 keyboard and my PS2 mouse (USB connected via PS/2 adapter).

I have a USB keyboard and mouse as well, and these are not affected by the same problem. Keyboard and mouse both work outside of XP. I have tried deleting the keyboard device in device manager and it worked for 2 or 3 reboots, but since this morning it's back to freezing every time I touch the keyboard.

I have actually seen this happen a couple of time, one of which the system had fallen off a desk. The connector actually had to be resoldered the other I have yet to take the time and figure its problem out.

Hi, my PC has not fallen off the desk. For your info the hardware manager in control pannel indicates that it cannot access the keyboard .error10. When I connect via usb it says device is working. But it is not and numlock light still on. I have googled www and see many items with same prob but no real solution/ des

Does the keyboard work before windows loads. I.E. if you press f8 while the system is booting does it bring up the boot options?
Also do you have this computer connected to a network with remote desktop enabled?

To my surprise it did work. I was able to bring up safe mode. It loads
Windows xp are build xpsp sp3 gdr 080814 1236 I thenseleted last safe boot no versions listed so carried on. Sys same as before except osk in middle of screen rather than along bottom of sreen.
The problem with keyboard occurred many months ago. In that time I have run various anti virus progs and register cleaners so assume sys is free of crap.ps is stand alone in myhome only network is broadband connection.remote desktoop disabled

I eventually fixed problem by modifying the upper filter in the registry item for the keyboard. It was incorrectly set to tfk6mon (somehow) and should have been kbdclass.
The keyboard worked OK after reboot. At least I know know how to brouse and fix register keys.
