We recently got a Yorkie puppy. He is absolutely adorable and we love him so much!

The problem is that when he goes poop sometimes little "poops" get stuck to his fur. He has to get a bath to get them off and I've even had to cut them off.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can prevent this problem instead of fixing it after the fact?

What are you feeding him? I have more faith in conventional dog chows than many. Regardless of what you are feeding him, his stools should be well formed, tending to fall cleanly on the ground. If not, have a vet check him and find and fix the cause of loose stools. Good to set up a relationship with the vet even if he isn't due shots right now. And the vet may feel he needs a more aggressive shot program than what the breeder said. My vet is a bit paranoid, but I go along with his recommendations.

If his stools are well formed, and it still sticks, you may need to move up to a better chow. If you are feeding a corn based chow, moving up to a concentrated, meat based chow will produce smaller, firmer stools. They will be easier to clean up and may have less of a tendency to stick to him. I see little reason to go beyond Pro Plan, Iams, etc. That is what extremely valuable service dogs eat, and I know of thousands of them thriving on it. Make any changes of diet slowly over about a week. Make as few changes as possible, and stick to the same protein source if you can.

You could also clip off some of the hair it sticks to.
