I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. Only 47,000 miles. Gear shift will move, but the vehicle will not go in gear.

Does it feel abnormally loose?
You may have broken the shifter mechanism/cable.
With the engine off, have somebody watch at the transmission while you move the shifter inside the vehicle. If the shifter at the trans isn't moving, you'll need to repair it.
