My main water feed from the street appears to be leaking at the base of a large tree between the house and the street.

Is this a problem for my local water dept or just my problem?

It would seem that a root might have compromised this feed.

Is it possible to repair these lines or are they just replaced?

What size are these lines and what are they made of?

How deep are they typically buried?

1. If the water line is on your property it is your problem,

2. It is possible that a tree root moved the pipe and broke a connection or it could be that the pipe has rusted and a hole has come in it.

3. The repairing of the pipe depends on what the problem is. It may be a small crack that would require just a little digging or it could be a rusted pipe that would reguire replacing the complete line.

4. The size depends on several things. Does it only supply the house or does it supply the sprinkler system also, if you have one.

5. The depth depends on the frost line in your area. In very cold parts of the country it could be as much as 8 to 10 feet, in Florida could be as little as 16 inches.
