    Butt jointing paving slabs -
Hi. Can someone tell me why some paving slabs can be butt jointed but others say "on no account should these slabs be butt jointed". What is the problem? I want to replace my patio slabs which have all been laid butt jointed, but it seems that my choice of new slabs is severely restricted if I don't want to have to fill joints between the new slabs.
    Thanks

Butt-jointed is never a good idea because there's no room for expansion due to heat or movement leading to spalling of the slabs. Just leave a small gap (close jointed) instead and fill with sand.
