Hi, I have read previous questions on this site, and seem to have a few niggling questions remaining.

In my finished basement I have a toilet,shower and sink, plus a laundry tub draining into an ejector pit which pumps into my septic system.

The ejector pit has a lid which is cracked, and has been 'repaired' previously, badly I might add. It has two pipes coming from the lid. One I assume is the waste pipe, and other is the vent pipe? In my roof, the vent pipe (assumed) joins the only vent pipe to breach the roof.

From other postings I am guessing that this venting method is wrong?

I am getting, on occasion, septic/methane odors in the garage and basement. A plumber has said that the lid is irreplaceable as it is outdated and no longer sold.

How difficult is it to change out or replace the ejector system?

Is a new vent essential? Access to piping is very difficult.

Hi Dan,

If the old ejector lid is metal I would take it to a welder and have the crack welded over. This will be much cheaper then installing a new system. As for the vent even if the manufacture says it's OK to tie to the house vent it's not good plumbing practice to do so. The ejector pit vent must breath both in and out while the house vent just breaths in. The house vent brings in fresh air but if you connect a ejector vent to it you will be pulling in sewer gas instead of outside air. Regards, Tom
