The previous owner installed a new tub and shower surround and put it on top of the existing drywall, not the studs. So now I am looking at the screws of the surround. Any ideas how to finish this edge off? I am tempted to tare the entire thing out and do it right but I thought I would check as I would guess this happens often when somebody thinks it is a "simple" project and really has no idea?

Try a piece of plastic trim from big box store. They have a door stop in plastic that may work for u. It can be glued on. Buy small piece to see if u like the look.

If u use an adhesive caulking in white will also seal edge.

Thanks Chuck, I will give that a try and see how it looks. Certainly worth a shot before I pull out the surround and do it correctly.

Definitely not installed properly. I would try some covers for the screws. May have to change the screws. I would silicone the covers to make sure they stay in place. You may want to remove screws, properly glue surround to wall and then silicone covers in screw holes.
