I just had a new toilet installed and it will not flush properly. I hear a lot of air and when I tried to plunge it, I hear it very clear in the shower drain. The toilet and shower are side by side. There has been no solids only clear liquids. The first two days were OK, except for it being rather loud from the tank, and then it started having issues. The water goes down super slow. I tried to stick a coat hanger through the drain, but I can not. It will not and feels like I am just hitting the porcelain.

Let's see if you have something down there. Purchase a closet auger,(see image) and auger the bowl, (see image) Good luck and let me know if it helped. Tom

I am with Tom but have a few additional thoughts. Tell us why you replaced the other toilet. Why didn't the installer insure it worked before leaving. Did you pay him knowing is wasn't right?

Bob, Terrylyn said that the toilet worked "OK" the first two days and that only liquid waste was flushed so, according to that, I'm going to guess that the plumber installed the toilet so that the wax gasket has slipped into the drain a bit and is causing issues with the toilet flushing properly.

Of course, trying the closet auger is a good first try, but I'd call the plumber back and have him remove that toilet. I'd stand over him while he removed it and MOST LIKELY (:rolleyes:) they will find that the wax gasket slipped and is the issue... maybe?

Should be as simple as replacing the wax gasket and there should be no charge for the return visit.

You are correct. The toilet worked perfectly the first few days and there wasn't an issue. He flushed it 3 times and showed me everything.

I had it replaced because I had my bathroom completely gutted and remodeled and laid laminate flooring. I had the tub, toilet, and sink removed and replaced all three of them. The old toilet always flushed great, but it was older than I am, the wrong color, and the inside had been fixed many times.

Anyway, I am going to take your advice and call the plumber back and have him remove the toilet. The seal slipping makes perfect sense, because there has been no solid materials flushed and it is draining but very slow. I appreciate your advice, I learned a lot about a house and how it is put together, but the toilet eludes me. I appreciate everyone's time on this.

The only other issue is that it is really loud. Sounds like a lot of pressure and air and it has like a sharp whistle sound. If I turn the water pressure down it seems to help some, but I have to wait until its fixed to really set the water pressure to the right level.

Let me expand on Marks slipped wax ring. In my capacity as shop trouble shooter I began to run into a slew of complaints on our new construction that were just like yours. I knew they all couldn't be " bad toilets" so I went looking for the cause. I found that when installing the new bowl that the wax ring had been forced out into the discharge pipe and blocking the free flow of water. When the water hit it a backpressure was set up preventing the siphon that makes a good flush and the solids just swirled around while the water went slowly down. I had to set up meeting with our plumbers and show them the problem and how to fix it. When you set the bowl, put the wax seal down on the flat side to the closet flange. Then take your hands and bevel the wax seal outward so that when you set a bowl on it the wax is forced out instead of in blocking the flush. The customer complaints stopped and I had less work to do. Try molding the wax seal so it doesn't choke down on the flush. Good luck, Tom
