I removed the handle and vanity cover. I used a deep well socket to remove the back nut, but after loosening it just spins. It will not come out. Everyone I have asked tells me it should back right out.

The vanity cover is called an escutcheon. Is this a cartridfge valve? Brand and model or a picture would help
It's a stem-type. Not sure of the brand, the house is 25 years old. I can, but haven't removed the packing nut. I don't want disturb the bushing. Working on the photo now.
The pic s/b under attachments... let me know if you don't receive it
Don't bother with the nut any more but pull out on the stem very firmly as your turn the stem counterclockwise, keep pulling.
It worked! The gasket in the middle of the stem was pancaked badly. I was concerned about pulling on it too hard in fear of damaging anything. I removed the front nut and washer, put the handle back on for a better grip and pulled. It popped right out. Thank you very much. My wife is very happy now. Happy wife=Happy life.
Happy wife will make you a safe , happy man. Good luck
