Why won't my nursing mama cat care for abandoned kittens?
A stray mama cat gave birth to kittens lat week. She abandoned them. Since I had a nursing mama cat I brought these babies home. My nursing mama will feed them but it's a struggle. She doesn't properly care for these abandoned babies. Is this normal? How can I get her to care for these little inocent babies?

    Hello a:

If she let's them suckle, she'll probably adopt them in time. Just leave 'em in there.

Not all mommas will adopt orphaned babies. She may see them as competition for food for her own babies.

What you can try and do is put vicks on her nose and vicks on the babies (both hers and the new ones). The scent will all become familure.

Its not common for new mothers to take on more babies. Sometimes mammas who lose their litters won't even take in a new litter. I know there are a lot of stories of strange animal adoptions, but remember, that's why those stories become popular, because its not common.

Try the vicks. Ive heard from a breeder of dogs that vicks helps with animal adoptions that need to happen. It gets rid of the strange scent and has everything in the nest become one scent. The vicks eventually wears off and the mamma has adopted the babies.

Of course, she may never take care of them. If left unsupervised, she may kill them and move her babies elsewhere away from the strange smell.
