Every once and a while our well water gets very diry with fine black sand. It just sems to happen. A day later it returns to clear and all seems all right. The holding tanks are coated with the sand and difficult to clean. Can you tell me what causes this and what I can do to stop it. I am thinking of putting a filter on, do you have a recommendation?

Sounds like your pump is sucking up soil. You need a well man to check it out. If left alone this will clog up your faucets. It could be your sand point has developed a split that's letting in the dirt. In the mean time it's building up on the floor of your heater. Your heater MUST be flushed to keep it clear.

For long life and fewer troubles you should keep your heater clear of mineral build-up by flushing on a regular schedule. Let me show you how. Attach a hose to the boiler drain at the bottom of the tank. With the pressure on, open the boiler drain and let it run until the water runs clear. You will see a spurt of red,(rust) followed by white grains,(lime or calcium carbonate). This shouldn't take more then a few minutes. Do this monthly to keep it clear. Now pull each aerator and clean the screens. Be sure you put them back togather the same way you took them out. Don't forget to flush it out every month. Your heater will thank you for it
