Hi, I have a similar problem... I agree with the tough love for now and I do have a steel crate. My problem is that I got a big one and I have my 3 month beagle peeing in it at night or when I leave her in the crate to go out. I do not leave her for a long time. Sometimes I only leave her for an hour and she will still pee! I am very vigilant and will take her out as soon as she wakes up or as soon as I return home. She first pees and then start barking to go out. I have installed a baby radio in her room so I can monitor every single move. This morning I restricted the crate again for the second time... the last time... my husband (a person that never had a dog in his life) told me to me that I was doing wrong and that I should give her the whole crate... till then... every morning will find pee in her crate - no poop, that she will do it as soon as I take her out on the soil. I am tired of washing her carpets. There was a time I was using floor cloths because I ran out of towels and her carpets. She does not revlieve herself in the house. She has a small bell at the door and she rings it to go out - so I am very happy with that. It is a pity she does pee in the crate. Sometimes I think that she does not mind sitting and sleeping in her own pee! She will do pee and poop during the day in the soil in the garden. She just had her last vaccination yesterday, so now she will be able to go out for walks next week. I hope that this will change a bit her relieving problem. As far as exercise, she has a lot of space to run and play outside and inside. I am also prepared to take her out for long walks 3 times a day. I do not work so I have very flexible hours. I go out only to pick up the kids and go shopping. NB I am quite sticked with her, I am not soft and I let her know that she is doing wrong every single time, she always has that quilty look on her that disappears immediately whe she sees me cleaning her crate. I do not know what to do... sometimes I feel like leaving her there in the morning... I go down like a madwomen, put on the jacket open her crate and dash out in the garden only to find that she already done it and it is still warm! I get so frustrated and start the day in a very mad mood! Then she is so lovely during the day in the house, rining the bell and going out no accidents, I cannot understand her. Anyway, this morning I restricted her space and I came in the house after 2 hours finding that she managed to do it and did not wet the carpet, it just went the other side of the empty crate... I cannot immagine what she will be doing tonight... I am sure I will find pee again in the morning. I tried it for a week last time but did not work. I am taking her toys out of the crate now also... I hope it works... tired of trying out and reading about this!

3 months she is still a baby. It sounds like you are on the right track, some dogs pick it up right away other dogs it takes a painstakingly long time before they have that "ah-ha" moment. One thing I can suggest is making the crate smaller. Only big enough for him to turn around and lay down. If the crate is big enough he will designate a pee area.

With puppies, anytime they eat or drink, take him out right away. When he does his business, praise praise praise! Make a HUGE deal out of it. Even give a small treat.

When was the last time he was at the vet for a check up? One thing that could be a possibility is a bladder infection. Although it sounds a bit like separation anxiety.

How does he act when you are trying to put him in the crate?

HI, thanks for your reply. It is a she and I cannot make the crate smaller than it is! Yesterday I woke up really early - like half an hour before she does normally. I woke her up and she and the crate was surprisingly dry. I put her to sleep at 9.30 and I woke her up at 6.00 in the morning. So she can keep it all night! I just wanted to know that. I was on top of the world, I was prasing her etc. The next time I put her in the crate the same day for only and hour and a half, she did it and then she cried... so that how it goes. She wakes up and then she cries to go out. I do not know what to do next. I am also listening and on alert in case she wakes up and run immediately and let her out. Funnily enough... she does not do on her bed in the kitchen when she wakes up... she just ring the bell to let me know she wants to go out. I wonder if I should put a small bell in the crate also... it might brake the spell?? Last night I only left her on newspapers... she was full of pee... the next time I left her I put nothing thinking she might really not like the fact that she has to sit in her pee... she did not mind, she did it again. I think that she does not mind her stuff but she really minds other dogs' stuff... Today was her first time out after the vaccination. I took her for walks and she did not want to do any... I took her again and she peed but was very resistant when she saw or smelt other dogs stuff. I am out of ideas... and I think I am going to loose it one of these days.

That's how it goes... she wakes up... then she does her business very quitely... then she starts crying to get out of the crate!

The vet said that there is nothing wrong with her bladder... I also remove the water after 7.30pm and make sure I take her out as often as I can before she goes to sleep. So... I don't know what else?

One thing... she has been at me for a month an a half... when I brought her home I used a vet bed in the crate... because she was on a vet bed at the breader's house... maybe that is the whole problem with it all... Then I got so tired of washing the vet bed, it is heavy and bulky... I still have it but do not use it... I hopefully use it when she starts keeping it all night. I know she can, but chooses not to. I now use nothing... newspapers... I don't like it... she is not comfortable... but I am tired of washing her stuff... its been a month and a half now washing 2 loads in the machine every day. I am luck it is warm here... and they dry easily... immagine it was winter!!

Hi there... This morning the crate was dry. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I hope it is not a one off! So this is the second time I found the crate dry since she's at us... i.e. from the 5th of April 2010. I removed her water at 7.00pm yesterday and exercised a lot. I also put her favorite blanket and a lot of softoys in her crate. I had removed all her bedding and toys from her crate. Her crate is small but she can still cuddel up and she can turn also. I cannot make it smaller... It would be cruel I think...

Hi,I just got a Beagle Puppy(9 weeks) 5 days ago and I am really tired since she is with us.She does not like to sleep in her crate and is crying all night long.She spents time during the day in the crate but as soon as I lock up the crate she starts crying,and tries to get out.I have sleepless nights and don't know what to do.She even got caught up with her lower jaw in the metal door.That caused that we needed to cut a piece around her lower jaw.(lucky we had a metal cutter)It was very painful for her and she just was screeming a lot,and is was a shock for all of us.But she is doing fine and did not have any serious injuries.I brought the crate back in store.It was a plastic one with a metal door.I bought a metal one in Fleet Farm and think this crate is better.
She is not housebroken yet. I go out with her as often as possible.We have a huge back yard with fence which is very nice.But when she makes her business and we go back in house she pees again.I think it need a lot of patient to get her trained.So I hope it is getting better.I also watched some training videos in YouTube,which are very helpful .I am glad have found this forum and hope to read more about your experience.I am sorry if my english isn't perfect but I am from Germany and still study english.So guy's have a great day and fun with your puppies smile

Hi there! Don't get discouraged! My beagle is going to be 4 months tomorrow. She is a girl. I crated her from day one and believe me, it is so rewarding to know that she is safe, your house is safe and you and the kids have peace of mind! She likes the crate and I crate her during the day but not more than 3 hours at a time. During the night I crate her all night. (I had to reduce her crate so she stopps soiling it - it is too big for her) she has just been promoted, I extended and made her crate bigger, she is doing well and she is not soiling her crate during the night and waits for me to take her for a walk. It took me about 14 weeks to come to this point... have patience... I was going crazy. She has been housebroken for a month but goes crazy when it is raining, she does not want to go out! My biggest problem was at night soiling the crate. The other problem I am still facing is the eating poop business! I am using 'Forbid' and I am on guard all the time so I can remove the poop in the garden as soon as she relieves herself. It is very difficult to catch her in the act because I have to go in the garden checking on her all the time. So that is my next target... to stop her from eating her poop. Yesterday I took her to her first obedience school... we have a lot to learn. Take care... and be patient.

For the first time she was not under supervision for an hour.What a mess when I came back cryyyy
I use to clean her poop right away in my back yard.Until now no experience like you have that she would eat it.It is a big challenge right now to get her housebroken.I watch her all the time and when I see her to walk in circles and searching for a spot I think she might have to poop or to pee and I run out with her.Most the time is nothing .when we come back in house she starts to pee grrrrrrrrrrr She likes to drink a lot,and I am thinking to schedule the meals and drinks.How you use to do that?And the nights are still sleepless.She does not like to sleep in her crate.It works during the day.She gets crazy when the door is locked during the night.So I leave the door open.It works during the day.When she tries to jump in my bed.Which is not possible.Tonight I going to try to put her in her crate an hour before I go to bed.That might work,hopefully.

Hi, yes I remove the water at 7.30pm. I will then take her to the garden every half an hour till she goes to sleep which is at 9.00 or 9.30pm sometimes later. She eats two meals a day. I wish she could eat more, but she does not... so I split her meals into two instead of three and it works out fine. At least she eats it and leaves nothing in the bowl. She wakes up at around 6.30 am, I take her for a 15min walk immediately. I then return home to prepare the breakfast for my husband and two boys. After they leave, I feed her at 7.00 or 7.30 am. We play a bit in the garden and then I go and have a shower and change. I take her out again for a walk at about 12.00 - 12.30 I crate her and go and pick up the boys from school. As soon as I arrive I open the crate and take her to the garden. I give her a biscut and some powder milk at 2.00pm. She plays a bit and usually goes to sleep for an hour again in her bed in the kitchen while the boys do their Homework. I feed her again at 5.00 - 5.30pm and she is all and about... I take her for a walk at 7.00pm and after we arrive I make her drink and remove the water. She is then going in and out of the house (in the garden) all the time until she is crated again to go and sleep at 9.00 or 9.30pm. I take her for the last time to the garden before I crate her. She sleeps all night in the crate with her door closed. The crate is in a separate room - I keep a baby monitor in my bedroom to monitor all her activity.This routine works out fine - I am not that I do not have the occasional accident... patience... and more patience... when I need to go out during the morning I take her out for an extra walk at 10.00am so she can be crated and I can leave the house with peace of mind. Hope this helps you! In the mean time I am still fighting with her problem of eating her poop! She did it this morning again... in the garden... HMMMMMM

Hi again! It looks that we are on the way to success!! It has been almost two weeks since she is not peeing in her crate!! Yheeeeeeeeeeee. I am really happy. She wakes up and is willing to go for a walk and hold it until we arrive in the right place to releave herself! Its great!! My only dispare is one thing now... I did not solve it yet!! Her poop eating. I have been using Forbid for about three weeks now with no luck. I am going to make an appointment with the vet now. I was also told at the obedience school that I need to change her food - I am feeding her Royal Canin (the vet suggested it because she was not eating Ecanuba - that what the breader was feeding her) now she is not even eating Royal Canin so I am slowly switching to Arden Grange now. I hope it works! I noticed that some of her fur is coming off and that she has red circles on her belly. I told my other vet about it but he said it was an allergy and he gave her an injection of hydrocotisone. Well, I am trying to solve one problem at a time. First it was the peeing, then I have to solve the eating of poop and then the skin problem. When everything is settled hopefully we can concentrate of training and start having some real fun! Hi there! Just came from the vet. She said that she has not medical problems related to the urination or the eating of the poop. That's good news... but the she losing her fur in patches is a condition known as Demodex Mange - basically she has to take an injection every week for 5 weeks and use this ointment on her!! It is a good thing I had a second opinion. The other vet had no idea! Now hopefully we start the treatment. She has her first injection today and the rest every week. What I am worried about is that at the end of this month we are going abroad for a week and she is going to the Boarding Kennels and they have to do the lotion treatment on her. More over, I am afraid that in those few days I will loose all the progress or I will get new surprises or new habbits when I return!! Any suggestions?? Can it happen?
